Mr Speaker, this House had, on two previous occasions, raised separate motions on stepping up our nation’s efforts to tackle the climate emergency.

MP Louis Chua supported expanded parental leave and proposed tying paternity leave payouts to utilisation, increasing childcare leave, and enshrining flexible work arrangements to ease parenthood challenges and encourage family life.

MP Louis Chua warned of the rapid erosion of hawker culture and proposed measures like rental caps, meal discounts via CHAS, NEA management of hawker centres, and revamping development and succession schemes to ensure the trade’s sustainability.

In his speech on the motion to raise the debt limit to $1.5 trillion, MP Jamus Lim (Sengkang GRC) indicated that while the increase was not nefarious, there is a need for better understanding of why there was a sharp increase in the quantum relative to prior instances, how the greater interest burden will be handled, and how trickle-down benefits of debt issued to foster financial development may be realised.
