Sir, I have been requesting sheltered pedestrian crossings for my Kaki Bukit ward, a Silver Zone, in previous MOT’s COS debates. I would like to continue my request this year as it is a crucial feature to have especially for my elderly Kaki Bukit residents.
Sir, my ward consists of HDB blocks that were built in the late 70s and early 80s and have a high number of aged residents. There are two neighbourhood centres which each houses a food centre, wet markets, shops and supermarket. These two neighbourhood centres, Blk 537 to 539 and Blk 509 to 511 precincts of Bedok North St 3, are the focal point for my residents for their daily needs such as groceries shopping and eating their meals. As any other neighbourhood centres, it also attracts many non-residents who come to shop and fulfil their food craving where many come by their own vehicles or commute by public transports.
Sir, the last few years, we have witnessed erratic weather conditions, super-heavy rains and strong wind, especially during the monsoon season. And for the past few years also, there has also been an increase in PMA users in my ward due to the ageing population. Hence, Sir, I have been persistent in my request to MOT for sheltered pedestrian crossings in my Kaki Bukit ward, linking the surrounding blocks and the nearby bus-stops to these two neighbourhood centres.
