Budget debate speech by Gerald Giam: Addressing employment challenges for mid-career PMETs

Over 41,000 PMETs are unemployed, with 10,700 jobless for more than six months. Many have had to take up roles below their skill level or expected salary, or struggle to break into growth sectors despite their efforts to reskill. We need a more structured and targeted job placement programme and a returnship programme to help PMETs secure better jobs. Gerald Giam (WP-Aljunied) proposed these in his speech in Parliament today.

Budget debate speech by Faisal Manap: The sandwiched dilemma

In his budget speech, Aljunied MP Faisal Manap drew attention to the plight of the middle class in Singapore, sometimes described as the ‘sandwiched’ class, earning too much to qualify for the bulk of social assistance and support; but too little to have a significant financial cushion.

Budget debate speech by Louis Chua: Observation of our reserves

In his budget speech, Sengkang MP Louis Chua spoke about the surprising reality of Singapore’s public finances over the years, where higher than expected surpluses have been common since 2021, in spite of repeated estimates of annual deficits. It begs the question of whether the Government is consistently collecting more than it needs, and if raising the GST was required.

Budget debate speech by He TIng Ru: Revisiting a development dashboard

In her 2025 Budget Speech, MP He Ting Ru (Sengkang) revisited the idea of using a developmental dashboard to better measure our social outcomes. Arguing that we have to approach our policies from a position of strength and abundance, rather than fear and scarcity, she also discussed how to apply the dashboard to areas such as inequality, participation in society, mental health and our readiness for the future, and to use it to measure outcomes, not just inputs. She hopes that with active input and participation from Singaporeans through fora such as Citizen’s Assemblies, the dashboard can be a channel through which we can shape our nation as we look to the next lap.

Budget debate speech by Jamus Lim: Time for Wages to Rise

Since the pandemic, wages have fallen behind both increases in inflation as well as productivity. It is high time for salaries to rise, and there is more the government can do to expedite this adjustment, including ensuring that NWC guidelines are more widely adopted, equalising the employer share of CPF, and instituting a statutory minimum wage. Restoring the real purchasing power of wages is a sure-fire way to help working Singaporeans cope with sky-high costs of living.
