Budget debate speech by Gerald Giam: Addressing employment challenges for mid-career PMETs

Over 41,000 PMETs are unemployed, with 10,700 jobless for more than six months. Many have had to take up roles below their skill level or expected salary, or struggle to break into growth sectors despite their efforts to reskill. We need a more structured and targeted job placement programme and a returnship programme to help PMETs secure better jobs. Gerald Giam (WP-Aljunied) proposed these in his speech in Parliament today.

Budget debate speech by Louis Chua: Observation of our reserves

In his budget speech, Sengkang MP Louis Chua spoke about the surprising reality of Singapore’s public finances over the years, where higher than expected surpluses have been common since 2021, in spite of repeated estimates of annual deficits. It begs the question of whether the Government is consistently collecting more than it needs, and if raising the GST was required.
