Pritam Singh has been a Member of Parliament since 2011, representing the Eunos division of Aljunied GRC. He has served three terms as a Member of Parliament and is currently the Secretary-General of the Workers’ Party. His political journey began as a volunteer before he became a member of the WP Youth Wing. He later took on roles such as Party Organising Secretary, Assistant Secretary-General, and eventually Secretary-General.
Involvement with the Workers’ Party
Pritam Singh has been an active member of the Workers' Party (WP) for around 15 years, contributing in various roles. His political involvement includes:
- Secretary-General, Workers' Party (present)
- Assistant Secretary-General, Workers' Party
- Party Organising Secretary, Workers' Party
- WP Youth Wing Member
- Volunteer with the Workers' Party
His tenure as a Member of Parliament has been marked by significant contributions to national issues and scrutiny of the Government’s policies.
Vision for Singapore
Pritam was inspired to join the Workers’ Party after observing the inability of the People’s Action Party (PAP) to change itself from within. He believed that for a more democratic society to emerge, the opposition needed a voice that was distinct from the PAP. Pritam saw that the PAP was incapable of self-reform, which motivated him to join the Workers’ Party and contribute to creating a political landscape where diverse views are represented.
Pritam advocates for a more balanced political system, where at least one-third of the seats in Parliament are held by non-PAP parties. He believes that a diversity of views is essential for a healthy political environment and for the wellbeing of Singaporeans. Pritam also stresses the need for a strong, institutionalised opposition to ensure that all voices in Singaporean society are represented in Parliament. This, he believes, would strengthen the country and its unity.
Philosophy and Passions
As an opposition MP, Pritam has taken on several key roles, including highlighting local and national issues, as well as holding the Government accountable. Some of his significant contributions include:
- Questioning the Government’s representations on TraceTogether data and its initial claims on contact tracing
- Calling for transparency regarding investigations into two Ministers who were renting government bungalows
- Challenging the sale of Income from NTUC Enterprise to Allianz Insurance
- Raising concerns over the unmasking of NRIC numbers of Singaporeans registered with ACRA
- Advocating for improvements in housing policies, cost-of-living concerns, and the national reserves policy
- Offering the Workers’ Party’s stance on international matters, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict
Many of these contributions can be found in his key speeches, available on the Leader of the Opposition website.
Pritam is deeply grateful to God for the opportunity to serve as an opposition Member of Parliament, providing him with the privilege to represent Singaporeans and contribute to the national discourse.
