Li Lian, who holds a Bachelor Commerce Degree in Marketing with Curtin University of Technology, is the eldest in the family with two younger sisters. Her father is a store-keeper and her mother is baby-sitting her niece. One sister is an Auditor and the other, an Analyst.
Outgoing by nature, Li Lian was well-liked by her fellow school mates in school, although her teachers sometimes found her too talkative and critical.
Interested in people, she decided that a career in the sales industry was the best for her. She was actively involved in both industrial and financial sales for 6 years, before moving on to become a Recruitment Manager with a private institution, a job which allowed her to deal with people once again. In 2008, she took on a position as Trainer with a financial institution.
At work, she was often asked to make presentations and to host major corporate events because of her ability to connect with people.
Li Lian lived in Marine Parade GRC for 25 years, before moving to Ang Mo Kio GRC in 2005, where she finally got a chance to cast her first vote. She was a volunteer with the Worker’s Party during the 2006 General Elections and subsequently joined the Party in June of the same year.
In August 2006, she was elected into the Youth Wing EXCO and became the Youth Wing Organising Secretary. In 2008, she was elected into the CEC and was appointed Deputy Treasurer.
Li Lian was selected to be the candidate for Punggol East SMC in the 2011 General Elections. With the support of the residents, the team garnered 41% of the valid votes in the only 3-cornered fight in GE2011.
After GE2011, Li Lian was appointed as the President of the Workers’ Party Youth Wing and Legislative Assistant to MP Pritam Singh in Eunos division of Aljunied GRC. Besides helming the recruitment of volunteers, she helped to plan and execute grassroots events for Eunos division. Li Lian also worked with the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council to address the concerns of the residents.
Li Lian was elected as the Member of Parliament for Punggol East SMC in the 2013 by-election, and is now a full-time MP.
Li Lian wants to generate greater political awareness and interest among women and youth in Singapore. She maintains that one must never think there is little or not much that one can do. “Unless you spread your wings, you will have no idea how high you can fly,” she says. She believes that everyone has ability, and the only difference lies in how we make use of that ability.
