A CELEBRATION OF 50 YEARS OF THE WORKERS’ PARTY

The Workers’ Party celebrated its 50th Anniversary at a Dinner at Fortunate Restaurant, Toa Payoh, on Sat Nov 3rd, exactly 50 years since WP was registered as a society in 1957. The event was organised by the WP 50th Anniversary Committee led by Party Treasurer, Eric Tan.

Present among the near 700 attendees were the family of the late Mr David Marshall (the Party’s Founding Chairman), as well as leaders of opposition parties including Mr Chiam See Tong, MP (Singapore People’s Party), Mr Sebastian Teo (National Solidarity Party), Mr Seow Khee Leng (Democratic Progressive Party) and Mr Osman Hassan (PKMS).

In her welcome speech, Party Chairman Sylvia Lim, NCMP, acknowledged the unceasing dedication of party veterans who ensured the continuity of the Party from 1957 to date, despite the odds and challenging political climate.

In his speech, the Secretary-General Mr Low Thia Khiang, MP, gave his assessment of what was needed to achieve the inevitable target of any opposition party who wished to make headway towards a stronger democracy – to win a Group Representation Constituency. He emphasised the need for party unity and for the people to play their part. You can read Mr Low’s speech here.
