Sylvia Lim gave a guest lecture to students of Public Law on the topic: The Singapore Constitution, Democracy and Oppositional Politics at NUS Law School on Fri Apr 13, 2007. Dr Kevin Tan, Constitutional Law expert, was the commentator.
During her presentation, Sylvia juxtaposed democratic ideals and the realities and touched on WP’s proposals for reform concerning government and the legal system from the WP Manifesto 2006. Highlights included her observations about the frequency of amendments to the Singapore Constitution, the nature of our fundmental liberties and her experiences of the 2006 General Elections as a case study for desired electoral reforms.
In his commentary, Dr Kevin Tan shared his own views on the topics raised from the point of view of legal scholar and historian. Among other points, he noted the ease with which the Constitution had been amended due to the composition of Parliament, and made suggestions on strengthening our insitutions of state e.g. the judiciary and Parliament.
During the question and answer session, students raised various issues including the Nominated MP scheme, proportional representation and opposition experiences in the Singapore Parliament.
